bartaco's sustainability plan

At bartaco, we’ve always seen our team members as family who have helped to foster a diverse community by creating a unique culture and connecting with our guests in each location. With programs in place to help every team member along their career path, there is a tremendous amount of growth opportunity whether you’re helping us at our homebase in Arlington or starting as a “dragonfly” at one of our restaurants. Wherever you are, we strive to create a fun, energetic and supportive work environment that fosters creativity and pushes you to reach your full potential. We’re proud to offer entry-level restaurant workers a living wage of $46,000 to start and provide a wide range of benefits for every team member including: dental + medical + vision, employee dining discount, PTO, mentorship, a scholarship fund, health savings account with company match and a flexible spending account. Additionally, with an accessible leadership team, bartaco takes employee feedback seriously to adapt to everyone’s needs and ultimately build a place that people want to stay throughout their careers

LED Lights

LED Lights

bartaco uses energy efficient LED lighting served in reclaimed containers made from wood troughs, and baskets. LED lights are highly energy-efficient, and have the potential to fundamentally change the future of lighting in the United States. Residential LEDs -- especially Energy Star rated products -- use at least 75% less energy, and last up to 25 times longer, than incandescent lighting.

Sustainable To-Go Program

Sustainable To-Go Program

bartaco has implemented a program to reduce its waste by taking a deeper dive into their takeout business. There are five main initiatives here: Compostable to-go containers made from biodegradable natural sugarcane, as well as PLA lids made from NatureWorks Ingeo™ PLA compostable plastic derived from corn grown in the USA and composts in 2-4 months in a commercial facility 100% recyclable to-go bags which are produced from reused/recycled paper material sourced from various paper mills across the USA Tongs made from bamboo, which is considered extremely renewable and sustainable since it is very fast growing. once bamboo is harvested, it only takes 3-5 years for a new bamboo stalk to reach full height, compared to trees, which can take 20+ years to reach full height. To-go salad bowls made from molded fiber pulp compostable bases with recyclable plastic lids bartaco's takeout chip bags uses paper sourced from certified sustainable forests in addition to recycled materials which are recyclable and biodegradable

Reclaimed Design

Reclaimed Design

bartaco's design and decor features mostly reclaimed wood. This shows up predominantly in two areas: Reclaimed wood frames: sourced from old barns and repurposed as design & decor in each bartaco location. Reclaimed wall wood: all wall wood is reclaimed from old barns, houses, bowling alleys, etc. – we clean it up and either paint it, or leave it natural to bring warmth to the space. Furniture & bookcases are sourced from antiques where possible, and in other cases (bookcases, shelves, bar top, table tops) are all fabricated from reclaimed wood. We also use washable burlap in restroom garbage pails to avoid plastic where possible.

Carbon Neutral

Carbon Neutral

Being carbon neutral means your carbon emissions are balanced by carbon negative projects to eliminate your impact on the environment. Research shows that sustainable businesses have an advantage over others. By becoming a carbon neutral business, you can help fight climate change, increase your company value, improve employee recruiting and retention, build brand loyalty, attract more customers and improve the overall community. Investing in carbon negative projects offers a effective solution to take action against emissions from essential business operations that can't be eliminated.

Utility API Integration

Utility API Integration

In order to more closely track and work toward emission reduction, bartaco has partnered with Green Places to leverage Utility API, a program that reports on electricity and natural gas usage via utility bills. Pinpointing consumption allows the bartaco team to better tackle large emission sources and develop future policies and programs to reduce their carbon footprint.

Paperless Mail

Paperless Mail

bartaco is partnered with Earth Class Mail, an organization that allows our Restaurant Support Center to ditch paper and send + receive mail digitally – keeping mail green. As a result we have contributed to their organization's effort to support reforestation and recycling + repurposing.

Remote Working

Remote Working

Remote working can be beneficial to businesses and employees alike. Having a remote workforce reduces travel time and emissions from daily commuting as well as reduces the need for larger office spaces that require energy to maintain. Working from home also can reduce waste and costs associated with building office supplies such as paper, ink, and single-use utensils while also minimizing general waste generation.

On Demand Hospitality

On Demand Hospitality

Touchless, mobile ordering has significantly reduced monthly printing of paper menus.

Gift Card Program

Gift Card Program

bartaco recently reintroduced e-gift cards to their gift card program – e-gift cards are an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional plastic gift cards.

Agave Straws

Agave Straws

At the bar, bartaco introduced agave straws, which are biodegradable, plastic and petroleum free, 100% plant based and ocean friendly readily available as opposed to traditional plastic straws.

Elkay Filtered Water Systems

Elkay Filtered Water Systems

At the bar, Elkay filtered water systems have kept bartaco from wasting the bag-in-box product, and has eliminated the need for bottled waters/sodas.

Navien Tankless Water Heaters

Navien Tankless Water Heaters

Navien condensing stainless steel heat exchangers recover extra heat that would be lost in non-condensing boilers. The result is a reduction in energy consumption, lower CO2 emissions and low exhaust temperatures allowing the use of less expensive venting materials such as Schedule 40 PVC.

bartaco x Fair Harbor

bartaco x Fair Harbor

bartaco announced a partnership with sustainable retail brand Fair Harbor, which creates unique swimwear pieces from recycled plastic bottles. The first collaboration launched in 2021, selling out in just a matter of hours. Encouraged by bartaco guest reactions to the sustainable offering, the company extended its partnership and relaunched another swimwear collaboration this past May. Sustainable partnerships remain a large part of the company’s strategy, and the company is seeking out additional brands that share the same values and ethos that bartaco has established.
