NWS is currently using the GreenPlaces Environmental Management system to measure and track the company's footprint including Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. Most recently NWS completed its 2021 Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report in accordance with GHG protocol. In 2023, NWS will have more visibility into real time emissions data through utility tracking in the GreenPlaces Environmental Management System. NWS will be tracking electricity, natural gas, and waste for all of its locations, wherever possible. This will allow for NWS to have more accurate emissions data in place of conservative estimates or assumptions.Â
Processing returned equipment can be an expensive and time-consuming endeavor. NWS' reverse logistics capabilities ensure that your returned equipment is taken care of – whether it needs to be returned to the origin, scrapped or repacked and replaced as stock.Â
NWS has a sustainable vendor policy in place to track and reduce supply chain emissions, which accounts for the majority of NWS's carbon footprint. In 2023, NWS is committed to surveying all vendors to understand their current initiatives and emissions. This will lead to more accurate emission calculations for NWS and allow for emission reductions if vendors are encouraged to switch to more sustainable practices. As a part of this initiative, NWS is taking the following actions: Publish Sustainable Vendor Policy: Implement policy establishing NWS priorities around sustainable sourcing & vendor expectations and make is policy available to vendors and customers Survey Vendors: To track emissions and initiatives of vendors, with a goal of 50% of top 10 vendors reporting in 2023Track Results: Monitor vendors for sustainability initiatives and emissions and set emission reduction goalsIdentify alternatives: Investigate greener alternatives for categories that have viable optionsÂ
NWS is purchasing renewable energy credits and upgrading to 100% renewable energy in order to eliminate our Scope 2 (electricity) emissions (~280 mT).
In order to reduce emissions from business travel, in 2023, NWS is implementing a Sustainable Flight Policy to educate and incentivize employees to choose greener travel options.Â
NWS has offset 100% of Scope 1 emissions (302 mT) through investments in verified carbon negative projects, effectively taking action against emissions from essential business operations that can't be eliminated. In conjunction with Scope 2 Renewable Energy Credits, these carbon credit offsets make NWS Carbon Neutral for Scope 1 & 2 Emissions.
In 2022, NWS began developing a formalized ESG program by: Conducting a structured materiality survey to confirm prioritiesAssessing current programs through a policy gap analysis and developing a suite of updated policies to adopt In 2023 NWS will be: Identifying KPIs to track and report on going forwardCreating a cohesive ESG program across all three NWS entities Releasing initial ESG report
NWS has conducted an initial waste audit and adopted a comprehensive waste policy, including recycling and waste reduction initiatives, based off the audit finding. Determining waste sources and types can help businesses pinpoint and prioritize their first step in lowering their waste-related carbon emissions. A waste audit can include measuring/weighing different types of materials, collecting data on what is thrown away and when, as well as identify better ways to dispose of the waste they do create.
Of the ~29 million plastic water bottles Americans purchase each year, only about 1 in 6 of them are properly recycled, leaving the others to end up in landfills polluting our water, air and soil. Eliminating water bottles from your workplaces is a great step towards reducing your carbon footprint and lowering waste costs. As an employer, you can provide reusable water bottles for your staff or seek aluminum alternatives that can be recycled more easily.
Investing in more sustainable printing practices not only lowers environmental impact, but also reduces operating costs for your business! Printing efficiences can not only come from using less ink, but investing in refabricated cartridges and recycled or compostable paper. There are even soy and vegetable based inks available, reducing the manufacture of chemical based inks that can more easily pollute the water and air.
